Abstract
Among the several factors in implant failure and complications, smoking is one of complicated factors, which is difficult for the dentists to control. If it is obscure to detect the cause of the implant failure and complications throughout the treatment procedure, clinician may consider smoking, drinking habit or the way of maintaining oral hygiene, but it is hard to confirm. There are lots of researches on smoking effect to the implant failure. The mechanism is similar with the disadvantage of smoking itself. Nicotine and CO produced by smoking cause to impair fibroblast function, to reduce healing of bone graft, to decrease blood supply and to increase coagulation of platelets. The amount of mineral in smokers’ bone is 10~20% lower in ordinary males, and 15~30% lower in the females than in non-smokers and it is proved that the amount of mineral in non-smokers is 2~6 times higher than long-term smokers. It is presumed that the failure rate of implants on smokers is higher than non-smokers. Smoking is fetal to implant long-term survival rate as well as failure rate. Success of implant osseointegration depends on duration of smoking or amount of smoking. Short-term smoking is rarely relevant to survival rate. It is reported that non-smoking lead higher survival rate, and that the effect of smoking is reversible. Therefore, this research is about the effect of cigarette smoking and considerations on dental implant related surgery.
